"Pongáio" was the name my Aunt Mona gave to a long, green, cool room where we gathered at her home —
replete with comfy chairs, a rocker, sewing machine, sewing goods, beautiful beads, shelves, books, bibelots, photographs, odds'n'ends, mementos of a life, treasures —
a gathering of all the useful & 'useless' things that so make life a pleasure.

Luigi Boccherini ~ Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid

A bit scratchy, but wonderful... and lovely art.

Here the version from the film, which I love... haven't seen it in a while. Something for tonight?
Ah... tonight last episode Sherlock, if I can bear the BBC here putting 3 minutes of adds for 1 minute of the series.
Exageration, I know, but it sure as heck feels like it!

(The Commander especially stern and hunkful)

A little bit more ear and eye candy.

Walking Man

Today Grandson came over for a visit.

First day as Independent Walking Man!

With his Mamãe and Papi walked in all by shishelf...
... rather unsteadly, true, but with no handholding or other support!

He has been in training for a little while now but still insecure and at the finger-clutching stage when wanting to get around on those jus-wanna-bite-em, short&chubby little legs — when in first gear, the one hand/one finger clutch; to rev up into fifth, the two hands/two fingers clutch.

But now... FREEDOM!

I didn't have this with my kids: the sadness to see the Herr Baby phase ending...
I guess the older we get, the appreciation of Time's changes, the realization of the preciousness of each moment, is deeper and stronger.

Love: Orange and Small

This week I saw on tv two quirky movies that I enjoyed. Both comedies, but not those in-your-face overkill. Both exploring people's ideas of happines and the redeeming aspect of love. One, in a supposedly free-spirited spiritualist community in confrontation with a conservativer rural village; the other, strange and dreamlike, sad and dark, of the possible littleness of peoples' lives and the idea of personal happiness, in a rather strange and weird romantic point of view.

For me, in Sommer in Orange, dealing with a "love community", the acts of most loving kindness in the face of unknown and a different people come not from the "love" disciples, with the exception of a latecomer girl, Leela. They come rather from the mayor's wife and the mailman, in a way the "least" characters, for Lili, the young girl trying so hard to fit into the "normal" of rural village life, or perhaps, just the more ample, acute teenage desire and suffering to "fit in". The love expressed in actual actions, which takes them out of the realm of idealized modes of behaviour, whether "enlightened" or "conservative",

Reveillon ~ NewYear's Passage

More cooking!

Last minute get-together and overnight stay at a friend's beautiful new house in the countryside to celebrate the passage into the New Year of 2014, the Reveillon or as we also say here the "Entering", Entrada.

We were four couples altogether.

Hubby and I did the cooking for the ceia at our home in the afternoon. Translation of ceia: supper, but with a suggestion of a feast to it, as it indeed was!

We started a bit late as had lunch with Son³, BelleFille³ and Herr Baby — Playing with The Baby is Very Important Work and needs time and attention!

We only got started with the cooking on about four o'clock and went right up the time we left at eight thirty (with a little time out for quick bath, packing and party clothes).

Menu Reveillon 2013
Hors d'Ouvres
Hubby made several*, as he greatly enjoys inventing new combinations.
Kürbiskernöl is a special pumpkin seed oil traditional to the Steiermark region of Austria. It has a dry, nutty flavor and is a surprising dark green color; it’s also great fun to pronounce!
* Tomato, fresh mushroom, hearts of palm drizzled with Kürbiskernöl
* Dried apricots, softened in port wine and filled with cream & bleu cheese, garnished with nasturtium flowers
* Carpaccio with capers, grana cheese, and seasoned olive oil
* Parma ham, mini Italian tomatoes
* Cheese plate: bleu, camembert, brie... and cherries
Assorted breads – black olive and plain ciabatta, French baguette
 Dried fruit
Nuts
Fruit

Entrée
For the entrée Hubby made again his delicious
Smoked Surubim* Crêpes with Wasabi and Dill Cream Au Gratin

Plat Principal
I made my
Filet Mignon à la Moutarde aux Herbes de Provence
and Deglacê Cream Sauce
served with the Hostess’s Fluffy Rice

Dessert
Apfelstrudel with Vanilla Ice Cream
Repeat performance — onto a delicious yummy good thing here!

The next day, after a leisurely breakfast that I just love, we were to be treated to Bacaulhau a Portuguesa to be made by the husband of one the couples, but there was so much left over from The Feast, that we just served it again for a very late lunch.
As we get older, although we do appreciate food more, we do eat less of it, and a good thing too!

The bacalhau has been set up for another dinner party, a legitimate excuse for more conviviality!

Good friends, beautiful surroundings, good food — an excellent "entrada" to the New Year.

Christmas 2013

Christmas blessings.

Christmas 2013 delight

Our grandson spent Christmas day with us. At 1 yr 3 months, he now was able to interact more with the moment. He had quite a bit of hard work getting some balls off the tree and checking out the lighting — cool bulbs, verified by Grammie first...
Discovering that the plastic, baby-proof balls do boUnCe!

Christmas 2013 delight

Family over for Christmas dinner.

Got up at seven, after going to sleep only at two-thirty am, to put the turkey in oven... with the finalizing etc, actually got it in a little later.
The "stuffing", my father's recipe of Outside the Turkey Onion and Sage Stuffing, I had already made in the day-before's cooking session: a whole other turkey, stuffing and sauce (gravy) for my co-suegros (my Belle Fille-to-be's parents).
When turkey done, made the gravy, again.

For someone "who doesn't cook", I sure was cooking a lot.
I guess the secret is out.

All this irregular cooking on my part in a busy kitchen (I'm a "lone"cook!), with my co-chefs, Gourmet Hubbie and BelleFilleToBe, who was in charge of the crêpe-making, and with "management" and support from said Son², till I got him cracking on the decorating.

During this time, also running about organizing the house, getting Son² to finish the Christmas tree decorations and other last minute things, setting the table — which envolves digging out the special plates and glasses from their hidey-holes as still don't have my kitchen cupboards! — hiding organizing the magazines and books that abound 'round the living room into the various bedrooms...

The last swipe of cloth, the last detail of the table setting finished, the last red bauble hung ... just three minutes before the doorbell rang!
Felt like one of those tv remodling shows!

Dessert
A beautiful and delicious Apfelstrudel, that a friend makes, with Vanilla Ice Cream
She makes it just like the good ones in Austria and Germany.

After all the rush, a tranquil delicious dinner and time with family — best way to spend Christmas!

Post Christmas and Hope

Christmas tree and decorations down till next Christmas, and on the Epiphany, or Dia de Reis, as is the tradition here that I've adopted ... when I can manage it!

This past year of 2013 was a very strange year: most excellent times and some very bad times. Certainly not boring!
And my folorn blog very lonely as no energy left for posting. We'll see this year how it goes.

With a chronic mental health problem in the family, which wore me down, and which I let get to my "energy marrow", for the first time I was feeling afraid of a new year starting. At least the "old" wasn't too good, but the known devil. A great part of this fear was just pure exhaustion, and now that I'm a bit recuperated, I'm feeling glimmerings of hope, and my regular good humor somewhat returning.

 Fingers crossed.

Les Revenants

This week finished watching the season of the series, "Les Revenants", (The Returned).
As is the new usual, googled it and found interesting info, including that it's only about a year old! So, very new!
I ususally get excited about some music, tv or movie, only to find out it's quite some years old.

One of the best parts, or "characters", due to its presence and contribution to the impact of the series, is its music/soundtrack. Like in Fargo, which would not be the movie it is without its soundtrack.

A little more googling and found the soundtrack...

A group, Mogwai, that (as explained above) I hadn't heard of, composed the music specially for the soundtrack.
Gizmo, the Mogwai
(see those almost gross-out fingers and toes?
I believe they're human ones, but weird over all)

A Mogwai to me was, up to this date, the furry, overtly cute but somewhat-off-putting (those weird fingers), creature from which the Gremlins were spawned in the 1984 movie.
(Well, that certainly dates me!)

I'm in the direct replay mode for this album; quite enjoying it.
Does nicely as a soundtrack for trying to working on my accounts.

Enjoy!

Thanksgiving

 photo Thanksgiving2013l.jpg

Although no official holiday here where I live, we have always tried to do a family dinner to celebrate, usually on the following Saturday. This year on the Monday I decided to make a dinner for the regular lunch hour on the day, Thursday, and those of the family who could make it would come. (nearly all those who live here in town made it!).

We also had the presence of my Norinha³ and our/The Grandson. As she is working in another state and comes back and forth, not always do we have the happiness of having them for a celebration.

I am working on giving daily, several-times-a-daily, thanks for all the blessings we have.
Also for my "homework", working on my surrendering to God...
I do so want to micro-manage the Universe!
And know the outcomes!
Getting through this difficult time is really testing my faith.

So, although really frazzled, I did want to celebrate a happy family moment and give thanks — and which all came together to happen.

Thanksgiving 2013 4 generations
Nana (Great Gran), Grammie (Gran), Herr Baby (New!)
Four generations were at the table — Blessing!

Stefano Landi - "Augellin" - L'Arpeggiata, Marco Beasley

Stephano Landi (1587-1639)
"Augellin"
Marco Beasley ~ L'Arpeggiata

Augellin
Che'l tuo amor
Segui ogn'hor
Dal faggio al pin;
E spiegando i bei concenti
Vai temprando
Col tuo canto i miei lamenti.

Il mio Sol troppo fier,
Troppo altier,
Del mio gran duol
Clori amata, Clori bella,
M'odia ingrata
A' miei prieghi empia e rubella.

Non sia più
Cruda no, morirò
S'ella è qual fù;
Taci, taci, che già pia
Porge i baci,
Al mio labro l'alba mia.

Segui augel
Né sdegnar
Di formar
Canto novel;
Fuor del seno amorosetto
Mostra à pieno
La tua gioia, il mio diletto.

Word rant

Warning: This is a rant!

Ok... so what's with Microsoft ?!!! (I'm sure I'm just one of millions of users swearing at *It/them***).

Recently changed from Word 2003 to 2007. Ok, ok, so I'm late.

But — DEFINETLY — NOT late ENOUGH!!!

Microsoft has c-a-r-e-f-u-l-l-y hidden all the formatting buttons in a myriad of fancy-looking but not-needed tabs and twice or thrice hidden the commands in mysterious menus.
The game: You are Suckers! Blaaaannnhhh!!!

So, instead of just getting the work done, oh no, you must play hide and seek. And if you are so lucky as to actually find what you want, you'll still do it in three or more steps than before.

***Pot party during software-making time? or just sheer bloody-mindedness? or should that be an "and/or" and an extended list of mind impairing drugs?

And, this unfortunate trend just continues onwards-and-backwards to the 2010 and 2013 versions.

Co- and Inter-

“Codependency is defined as a psychological condition or a relationship in which a person is controlled or manipulated by another who is affected with a pathological condition (typically narcissism or drug addiction); and in broader terms, it refers to the dependence on the needs of, or control of, another…Codependency may also be characterized by denial, low self-esteem, excessive compliance, or control patterns.[2]Narcissists are considered to be natural magnets for the codependent.”
“interdependence – a reciprocal relation between interdependent entities (objects or individuals or groups). This concept differs from a dependence relationship, where some members are dependent and some are not.
In an interdependent relationship, participants may be emotionally, economically, ecologically and/or morally reliant on and responsible to each other. An interdependent relationship can arise between two or more cooperative autonomous participants (e.g. – co-op). Some people advocate freedom orindependence as the ultimate good; others do the same with devotion to one’sfamily, community, or society. Interdependence can be a common ground between these aspirations.”
