"Pongáio" was the name my Aunt Mona gave to a long, green, cool room where we gathered at her home —
replete with comfy chairs, a rocker, sewing machine, sewing goods, beautiful beads, shelves, books, bibelots, photographs, odds'n'ends, mementos of a life, treasures —
a gathering of all the useful & 'useless' things that so make life a pleasure.

The Majestic Plastic Bag & Jabberwocky

The Majestic Plastic Bag - narrated by Jeremy Irons

Found the above great mockumentary via Content in a Cottage, a favorite blog—a varied feast of imagery, quotes, and vintage fonts.

This got me thinking:

The Trash Bags That Wish They Could
These poor defenseless critters also suffer a great deal here, very often impeded from getting to the little known Unchartered Southern Atlantic Patch by dastardly dumps, risky rivers, treacherous trees and other perfidious plastic predators.

I do not know if they are homing in on that one or would rather head over to the Great North Atlantic Garbage Patch.

For more information on Plastic Paradise Patches, go to the 5Gyres site and blog.

Reading of gyres, these words of Jabberwocky comes to mind.
’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
 Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
I can imagine the Plastic Bag gyring and gimbling in the wabes, chortling amongst its beamish polymerous companions.

Whatever it may mean of my mental, er, faculties, this was the only poem I ever memorized from beginning to end.
So here, from Lewis Carrol to you... down memory lane...
Jabberwocky

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
 Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
 All mimsy were the borogoves,
 And the mome raths outgrabe.

“Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
 The frumious Bandersnatch!”

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
 And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
 And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
 The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
 He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
 O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
 He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
 Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
 All mimsy were the borogoves,
 And the mome raths outgrabe.

My Own Private Idaho...

Wandering among my music folders, here in my Pongaio, I found this song of the B52s.... does this take me back! I quickly went to Youtube and found some great videos.

The quirky, funny, mocking, sharpness,... those marvelous, what were then corny, but now is vintage, my dear, getups... and the energy! The faaabulous 80s, with that hint of irony!
And to believe I was at Rock in Rio in 1985 and saw them live!
250 thousand people all dancing along!

I do believe I've been in my own private Idaho a bit too long this year!
You're living in your own Private Idaho
Living in your own Private Idaho
Underground like a wild potato.
...
You're livin in your own Private Idaho. Idaho.
You're out of control, the rivers that roll,
you fell into the water and down to Idaho.
Get out of that state, get out of that state you're in.
...and this:

Always thought there were quite a few someones partying&printing in basements in Brazilia in those astronamically-high inflation years!!!
So much legal tender flooding the market place.
Aaah! Must've been the in same unsavory "porões da ditadura"!

Just love the charrming, that certain simple life granny-canning-in-the-basement touch:
Livin' simple and trying to get by
But honey, prices have shot through the sky
So I fixed up the basement with
What I was a-workin' with
Stocked it full of jelly jars
And heavy equipment
We're in the basement...

A Wrinkle in Time

‘Wrinkle in Time’ author L'Engle dies at 88

When I read the title of the article (linked above), I rememebered right off the bat the name of the author, Madeleine — something a bit remarkable nowadays with my memory usually soooo bad.

Together with the name, a flood of girlhood memories, of being immersed in books, and this one of my favorites.

And it's funny, because just the other day, the image of the scientist mother cooking dinner in her lab, much to the dismay of some of her family, came to mind, and I was trying to remember from which book it came...

A Wrinkle in Time hardcover, 1960s (same cover as first edition except for addition of the Newbery Medal)

Nothing to Do?

From the summer I spent with Aunt Terry and Uncle John in Connecticutt, when I was thirteen.
Nothing to Do
--- by Shel Silverstein

Nothing to do?
Nothing to do?
Put some mustard in your shoe,
Fill your pockets full of soot,
Drive a nail into your foot,
Put some sugar in your hair,
Place your toys upon the stair,
Smear some jelly on the latch,
Eat some mud and strike a match,
Draw a picture on the wall,
Roll some marbles down the hall,
Pour some ink in daddy's cap ---
Now go upstairs...
... and take a nap.

--- Cole, William. Beastly Boys and Ghastly Girls, 1964

From this book, a treasure, from Aunt's library.
